The need for aviation exploded during the gold rush. Pilots were needed year-round for transporting supplies and prospectors to the remote gold fields.

By the mid '30s, the bush plane dominated travel and in the summer of 1936, Red Lake, Gold Pines and Hudson became the busiest airports in the world.

An old view of Gold Pines. This was a location along the Heritage Waterway that was halfway between Red Lake and Hudson. Before highway 105 opened, this was a regularly travelled waterway.
